Charles and Hannah - Dancing

Description

For SilverRacoon's contest where you had to draw their oc Hannah, link to her here [link] , with a male oc and then write a short story about it. :D My oc is Charles Herux, who has the ability to time travel and lives in a parallel dystopia Victorian London.

Hannah clutched the cane tighter to herself.
She could see brief glimpses of the moon outside, the sheer beautiful, powerful light of it was one of the few things she could pick up with her almost blind eyes. Hannah also seemed to feel it cooly touching her face, head tilted towards the source of light.
She was at a ball, not one she was particularly pleased to be at, not when everyone was whipering at her - not when her eyes were creating a nightmare that wasn't really there.
It was a masked ball and almost everyone but herself had worn a white mask which engulfed the entirety of their faces. Hannah herself wore a small, black mask which encircled her eyes. She'd got the dress code wrong and it had made her the butt of the joke for the whole evening; no other scandels had happened to divert their fickle attention.
The white masks of the other guests were blurred, leering faces to Hannah, which surrounded and trapped her. Every few moments she gritted her teeth and tried to tell herself that they were merely masks - not a fog of shadowed grins and narrowed eyes - but her head felt muggy from the loud music coming from the muscians, the wine she had sipped at had gone straight to her brain and caused an unrelenting headache. The crowd was too tight for her to squeeze through, suffocating -
"This is all rather dull."
The voice had sounded to her left. Male, young, the tone a little theatrical as if he enjoyed dramatically complaining to himself. Hannah turned to it, wondering what else they were about to say.
"It would have been more fun teasing Kimal - or even watching Ruxin and Bates snipe at one another - not like this," he continued. "Oh, well, time shall run out soon. Might as well see how this turns out."
Hannah squinted her eyes - she could not see a white mask upon the speaker, a blurred face amongst a sea of porcelain white. Maybe he too wore a mask like her own. He wore no costume but what she assumed were the usual clothes of a gentleman - though the blurry thing atop his head, a top hat, Hannah guessed, appeared askew.
She felt eyes staring right back at her, the figure of the speaker approached her.
"Good evening," he said, doffing his hat briefly in greeting. "By the look on your face you don't seem to be enjoying yourself either."
"It's not that," Hannah began, normally she would have found enjoyment in a ball such as this. Perhaps wildly dancing with one of the other girls for fun. "I'm just under the weather, that's all."
"Shame, every woman I ask to dance with me acts as though I have proposed marriage and every man I ask looks as though they'd quite like to punch me. Your world seems to be a mixture of over-friendly and un-friendly."
"'Your world'?" Hannah echoed, eyebrows knitting together in confusion. Did he mean social world? Was he from another country where balls were done differently?
She could hear the soft, somber smile in his voice as he replied,
"Unity is very important where I come from, it is the only way to survive. Or else the government would be able to pick us off one by one - I apologise, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about." He laughed then. "Tell me, miss -"
"Hannah."
"Lovely name, Hannah, had a cousin by that name. Tell me, Hannah, have you ever read a H.G.Wells book?"
She had had one read to her - all romantic scientific fantasy. Hannah nodded her head in the affirmative.
"Could you even consider the possibility that I am from another universe drastically different to yours? With the science that Mr Wells writes about being the only way to travel to them?"
"..."
"Not even a little?"
"Tell me your name," Hannah merely said.
"Charles. Charles Herux."
Porcelain faces had turned to watch the pair; the young blind woman holding her cane like a prop while she rubbed at her forehead and the lad with a scruffy suit on, holding a wine glass and considering the red liquid inside it, while his other hand kept on fiddling with a pocket watch. Checking it again and again. His smile was easy while he talked to the woman though.
Hannah tried not to look back at the phantom faces, not to glare at them because they unnerved her. She heard Charles put something down, a wine glass perhaps. He flicked something else open and sighed,
"Time's almost up."
"Do you return to your own world when time runs out?" She teased.
"And leave my heart behind instead of a glass slipper."
Hannah raised her eyebrow at his flirtation and Charles laughed warmly.
"I'm just joking - but give me one dance. I might not even exist in this world so we'll never meet again."
"Very well," she said, wondering where to put her cane. Expecting him to be slow, like all the other men dancing amongst them, however -
A pair of arms encircled her and lifted her up high, she yelped and suddenly began laughing when he dipped her and spun the both of them. The cane clattered to the ground, catching even more people's attention.
The blurred shapes that Hannah saw suddenly merged from the speed in which Charles was dipping and spinning her - those cold, sneering faces from the masks merged into one and became cloud like. No longer an imagined threat. She made to join in the dance, to clasp Charles and try to spin him around but when her fingers touched his arm she felt them pass through -
- into nothing.
Hannah thought she heard someone say 'sorry' or maybe even 'goodbye' and she landed heavily on the floor. Wondering if Charles Herux truly had vanished to another world.
